I’m happy to announce that this month my new ground defense book/DVD, When the Fight Goes to the Ground: Jiu-jitsu Strategies & Tactics for Self-Defense, will be available online and in retail stores all over the world.
I started working on this book on contract for Tuttle Publishing back in January 2010, and now, 3 years later, after countless hours of work writing, doing photo/video shoots, making edits, etc, it has now been published and will soon be released to the world. I always had a goal of one day becoming a published author, and that day has now arrived!
I had originally started working on the techniques in this book to help my students. I had taken up Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as well as MMA with the idea of learning what they do so I could more effectively teach people how to handle it in a self-defense context. Steve Hiscoe Shihan took an interest in what I was doing, liking what he saw, and encouraged me to explore the topic fully so I could share my what I learned with Can-ryu students from other dojos.
Then, one day, I was contacted by a representative of Tuttle Publishing because they liked how I wrote on my blog, and were interested in having me submit a book proposal for a new instructional format they had developed, combining a printed book with a DVD containing video content. Having developed my approach to ground defense over the past couple of years, I already knew exactly what I wanted to share…. and now it’s finally here, ready to be shared with the entire world.
While I did write an extensive thank-you list in my book’s acknowledgements, I would like to take the opportunity here to thank Steve Hiscoe Shihan for his continued support from the early beginnings right through to the writing of my foreword. I would like to thank Chris Olson Sensei for the many, many hours of work he put in as an uke, editor, website manager, etc. I would also like to thank Glenn Chow, my student who put his very professional photography skills to good work on this project, as well as Kevin MacDonald, who also let me strike his groin, bite his skin, pull his chest hair, and other nastiness for the benefit of our readers.
Looking forward to celebrating with everyone at our upcoming book launch party! Hope to see you there!
