Intro to Breakfalls for Stunt Performers

  • Intro to Breakfalls for Stunt Performers

Hitting the ground is one of the most common gags a stunt performer will be asked to do over the course of their careers. Being able to sell a fall, not just once, but over and over again over to hit every angle and be able to bounce back up ready for more is vital. Sometimes you'll get to wear protective pads, sometimes you won't, depending on wardrobe requirements. And pads won't necessarily be enough. Plus, concussions can cause damage that will affect you for the rest of your life if you're not careful. That's why it's important to learn a good base in breakfalls giving you the right orientation to hit the ground in a way that minimizes damage to your body so you can do all the takes required of you, and increase the longevity of your stunt career.

In this 3-hour seminar, you'll learn all the progressions from the ground up to teach your body how to hit the ground safely in a wide variety of situations. You'll learn how to control your body to maximize surface area hitting the ground so that you reduce impact to any one spot, head and neck control to prevent head impact, as well as how to make it look messy so that it sells for film. This workshop is great for new stunt performers or experienced ones who want to fine-tune or learn basic progressions for helping actors or other performers.

This class will be taught by stunt performers Lori O'Connell (5th degree black belt in Can-ryu Jiu-jitsu) and Chris Olson (3rd degree black belt in Can-ryu Jiu-jitsu). Check out Lori's stunt reel here.

It will be geared toward stunt performers, but is open to anyone who wants to learn how to fall safely. No prior martial arts training is necessary, but we recommend a good base level of fitness. The cost of the class is $70+GST. Space is limited to 14 people, so please sign up early to avoid disappointment.

Testimonials from Previous Courses

"The breakfall workshop at Pacific Wave Jiu-Jitsu is amazing! Each fall was broken down into progressions and each step was well explained so that everyone had a clear understanding of how to perform the movements. Additionally, the studio has awesome floors to practice on and there are soft mats to use as well. I learned so much from this workshop! Lori really knows what she is talking about and I would recommend this workshop to anyone who is interested in doing stunts!" -Megan Hui, stunt performer

"I found that Lori's breakfall seminar was full of great information for both veteran and novice stunt performers. The course was well-structured and managed to touch on all the important factors of doing a proper fall while managing to focus on the important aspects of safety as well as performance. This seminar is definitely a must for anyone looking to get into stunts, established performers, or even just people looking to mitigate possible injuries." -Matt Kennedy, stunt performer

"I took Lori’s breakfall class and found it most valuable. I learned a lot of skills that would have come in handy over the years. Lori was very organized and clear in her explanations and build up to the core set of falls she was teaching. We had plenty of opportunity to practice and receive feedback. I think everyone there walked away more than happy about what they had learned. I can't wait to take Breakfalls 201 as soon as I can. " -Braden Haggerty, stunt performer

"Lori is an incredibly effective instructor. After an hour of breakfall training, I was comfortably executing more than I thought I would in 3 hours. Her great use of progressions allows students to learn a spectrum skills quickly and safely. Her tremendous amount of knowledge and experience is apparent, which instilled trust and motivation from the get go. I gained many useful tools that will certainly allow me to feel more capable and confident moving forward as a stunt performer. I highly recommend her breakfall seminars, for both expanding, and maintaining movement vocabulary." -Louise Hradski, stunt performer
