PACIFIC WAVE JIU-JITSU

Open House Grand Opening Party this Saturday

We’ve been working very hard to get the dojo in a more finished state over the past month. It’s coming together nicely with only a few finishing touches left to do this week. We’re motivated to get it all done though so the place looks awesome for this Saturday’s grand opening party.

There will be cake, candy sushi (handmade by me), Rock Band and other games. We’ll also be holding a draw for gift certificates and dojo swag for those who RSVP (either on Facebook or by email to [email protected]). The party is open to the public, Sat. Mar. 31, 7:00-8:30pm, so come over and check out our new dojo if you’re in the area.ย Check out the Facebook event page.

I planned this party back at the beginning of the month, knowing that there was still a lot of stuff to get done. The purpose in planning the party was to give back to all the students who worked so hard to help us get the place all set up, but there was another more personal motivation behind the party. By scheduling a set date for the party, it forced me to put some elbow grease into getting the dojo set up sooner rather than letting it drag on over months (which is easy to do). Of course I want the dojo to look nice so that when people come to the party they can see what a cool place it is to train in.

Setting deadlines is a good way to push yourself to get a job done, especially when it requires you to be accountable to them. This is a useful practice for tasks or chores that can easily drag on. We did the same thing when we moved into our house. We planned a house-warming party to force us to get our house set up. I just followed this same logic when it came to setting up our dojo.

What kinds of tasks do you set up deadlines for to push yourself to get things done? I’m just curious if other people do this sort of thing.

Hope to see you at the party! ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. @Glenn: be glad she doesn’t take it out on you on the mat, shunning is preferable to a beating any day. Especially by a girl ๐Ÿ˜‰
